Riverwalk: Mission impassible
The riverwalk park plans have hit a snag.
The proposed scenic walkway along the Brandywine Creek spanning between Coatesville and Valley has received conditional approval from Valley's board of supervisors.
Among the conditions, the city must nix the portion of the park's trail proposed to cross the Glencrest Road bridge, leaving Coatesville with the alternative of either building a separate pedestrian bridge or rerouting the riverwalk.
Meanwhile funding for the project -- including a $1 million grant from the county and another $250,000 from Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources -- depends on planning and construction continuing to move forward.

Can we just get the thing built? How much more are the residents going to take from this administration? Ok folks, if this doesn't force you to the polls in the next election to get the right individuals in place then what will?
Riverwalk? How about making it safe to walk the city sidewalks first? All this riverwalk project will be is another high crime area in the city. Clean up Coatesville first. Bring business back to downtown. Then talk about revitalization projects. Not going to work any other way.
So let me ask you, how do you get businesses back into town without a valid reason? You create shops in the flats build a hotel and show other businesses that we are making progress. No business in their right mind would move here until they see progress. The flats could generate tax income that in turn could be used to add additional police (which of course could be used to lower crime) and second lower the 2.5 earned income tax. Then you will get people to move here and the businesses will follow. I agree that you need to work on crime but without any revitalization to generate revenue, the police will be undermanned and the residents like you and I will continue to shop elsewhere and get stuck with this ridiculous tax we are paying. Just my 2 cents.
We need to be diligent and stay on top of this.
There could be considerable amount cash flowing daily through a public/private partnership that may be called the “Coatesville Power Authority”. That is if a powerplant is up and running in Coatesville. Lehr and Walker’s powerplant plan may only be on the back burner.
Baker might not want to stick around for a new administration if this one should let the clock on the riverwalk grant run down.
Watch out Valley Township. The Walker Administration might be setting you up to take the blame for Coatesville missing the grant for the riverwalk.
Progress starts with taking care of the crime problem first. Then the businesses will come. Seems like the city is more interested in tax revenue than safety. How many businesses do you think are going to come into Coatesville and actually stay with the way things are? First thing you have to do is take out the trash. Once word gets out that Coatesville is cleaning itself up then business will come. Chief Matthews talks the talk but he sure as hell isn't doing anything else. Seminars on crime and gangs isn't going to take them off the streets. Good old fashinoned police work does that. Crime and gangs would never have been a problem if the city would've stepped up and done it's job in the first place. Go ahead bring redevelop the flats and put in the riverwalk. I'll guarantee you that within five years the residential area will be drug infested, the businesses will be long gone and Coatesville will be even worse. Clean the streets up first.
Listen I agree with some of your points however how do you focus on crime and its prevention if you do not have the budget to hires additional officers? The problems starts at the top. Walker needs to be removed and many (not all) of the members of council need to be replaced. We need a business person to run this city. Someone with experience and a proven track record. You know its a shame we had Jean Crack here and he was let go but its funny to see all he did was help to develop Chester and now back in Phoenixville. Now during that time what has Walker done? Really what has he done other then ride the coat tails of the people before him. Same with Matthews - bad hire but sounds like a nice guy. However we don't need a nice guy right now we need a cop who arrest someone. My hope is that Matthews will resign and Canale will step in and change the course of what is going on here. I don't have a problem with community policing however we need to clean it up first then use the community policing to ensure its success.
Aren't you all just getting tired of how Valley Township is standing in the way of progress in Coatesville? Now they're holding up the riverwalk. They didn't line up for the power plant alternative site. And they didn't make way for the golf course either. Other problems exist also, with roads and such.
Valley just wants to keep Coatesville down. It's all Valley's fault.
