Another Tough Loss

While the goals finally came last night, breaking a scoreless drought of 214 minutes and 58 seconds, the losses continue to pile up as they dropped another one last night, losing 5-4 in overtime to Gwinnett.

Yes, the team picked up a point in the standings, but ultimately it will need to start playing a lot better if it hopes to make the playoffs. It has lost nine of its last 10 games and has struggled in every part of the game, offense, defense, special teams and goaltending.

I think a big part of the losing streak is the fact they have no real veteran leaders in the locker room to pick these young guys up. Jim Henkel can provide leadership as he's been here before, but you can almost pinpoint the injury to Colin Pepperall for the T-Devils woes.

Since he has been out of the lineup, suffering a broken hand on Jan. 25 in a 5-2 win over Elmira, the team has won ONCE in regulation.

At first, I would say the loss of Caruso is a huge blow to this team. But now, the guys playing in front of...whoever is in net, need to step up and do their jobs.

They can start tomorrow afternoon when they play Johnstown in one of the biggest games of the season. Head coach Rick Kowalsky explained last night that they need to pick up two points in every remaining game against Johnstown this year, to at least have a shot at making the playoffs.

Maybe playing in the middle of the day will spark some new life into the team. Who knows?

T-Devils Trail 1-0 after One

Gwinnett scored a power play 5:37 into the game to lead 1-0.

The T-Devils out-shot the Gladiators 14-11 in the frame, but once again, failed to score. They actually have out-shot opponents 131-112 in first periods this year.

They were 0-for-1 with the power play.

It seems like they are looking for the perfect play out there instead of just getting pucks on net. This tends to happen to offensively-struggling teams.

Jason Smith doesn't look too bad making his second straight start in net, but the obviously isn't going to win anything if it can't put the puck in the net.

We are at the midway point of the second period here with the T-Devils still down 1-0. Shots are 17-13 in favor of Trenton.

Check back for a later update...

7-0?!?!?!

It was ugly here last night at Sovereign Bank Arena as the T-Devils suffered their worst loss of the season.

Cincinnati scored three power play goals in the first period and the game was over. The team showed no life the final two periods.

Jason Smith made the start in net while Dave Caruso got the call up to Lowell. He gave up all seven goals but cannot be blamed entirely for the loss. The T-Devils were 0-for-3 on the power play in the first period and the Cyclones got two quick power play tallies of their own which were deflating to the team. They added one more in the last minute and the rest was history.

The offense just cannot score goals. The players need to stop thinking about the injuries to Colin Pepperall and Brad Mills and play with what they got in the lineup. Every player needs to be accountable for their own actions.

Johnstown picked up a shootout win over Texas last night, so its lead over Trenton for that fifth spot in the division now stands at six, with two games in hand over Trenton.

I would say these players are simply going throught the motions, but it doesn't appear they are even doing that. Last night was probably the most lifeless team I have seen all season long. It should be interesting to see how they come out to play tonight against Gwinnett.

Check back here for an update in between periods for a live update.

Caruso Gets Call-Up

T-Devils No. 1 goalie Dave Caruso was called up to Lowell of the American Hockey League yesterday. This is the fourth time he has been called up to Lowell where he started one game and took the loss.

While this is good news for Caruso and his fans, it is not good news for the T-Devils. This means Jason Smith will be starting (I assume), and generally, the T-Devils have not played well in front of him. The first-year goalie has appeared in 17 games and has a 5-10-1 record. He has a 3.16 GAA and .904 save percentage. Through his four years at Sacred Heart University, his goals-against-average is over three.

Caruso has been the one steady element of the team this year, and for Trenton's sake, hopefully his stay in Lowell will be short-lived. As for Caruso, I wish him the best and hope is call-up lasts longer than the previous ones this season. The call-up comes right before he would have had the chance to take on his old team, the Gwinnett Gladiators, who come to Sovereign Bank Arena tomorrow. He compiled a 23-11-4 record at Gwinnett in the 2006-07 season.

The road won't get any easier as Cincinnati comes to town tonight. The last time these teams met the T-Devils held their own against the Northern Division's first-place team in a 2-1 loss and surrendered the game-winner with three minutes left in the third.

T-Devils Struggles Continue

It has been a rough couple of weeks for the T-Devils and their fans as they have now lost seven of their last eight games. The road doesn't get any easier as Cincinnati comes to town on Friday and Gwinnett on Saturday. To make matters worse, Johnstown beat Gwinnett tonight and now are four points ahead of the T-Devs with two games in hand.

Fortunately though, Trenton can make a statement on Monday afternoon when Johnstown visits the Sovereign Bank Arena.

The offense has been anemic as of late scoring five goals in its last five games. The injuries are also really starting to pile up as Brad Mills, Colin Pepperall, Mark Pandolfo all continue to be out of the lineup. Stephen Wood was added to the list last game as head coach Rick Kowalsky said he was "banged up." From the sound of that, it doesn't seem like the team's leading goal scorer among defensemen will be out for an extended period of time.

Another reason for the team struggling is its youth. With so many first-year players, it seems these guys have hit the proverbial "wall." The problem is, these rookies have hit this wall at the same time at the most inopportune time. With just 26 games remaining, it appears this team is treading in deep water trying to hang on to a playoff spot. They are on the outside looking in as of now and will not only need to string together some wins, but will also need help from other division opponents losing, mainly Johnstown.

***
I thought I would take a little time now to discuss the NHL. The race in the Atlantic Division is very tight and will most likely be determined in the last week of the season, perhaps the final Sunday of the regular season. My gut tells me the New Jersey Devils will come out as the division winners, with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia to follow. But if you don't win the division, I think you would rather finish in third place in the hopes of finishing 6th overall in the conference and play the Southeast Division winner, rather than finishing in the 4/5 slot and play Montreal. However, with both the Flyers and Canadiens struggling now, it is possible the second and third place winners in the Atlantic will finish 4/5 in the conference.
Despite Pittsburgh and its one-point lead over Jersey, I still think the Devils are the team to beat in the division. The loss to Boston tonight, along with a Devils win over Ottawa, hurts, but I gotta say, I did not expect this kind of performance from the Crosby-less Pens. Evgeni Malkin has plastered a Superman 'S' on his chest and has carried the load. Can this team really be this good?? I just don't get it.

Both the Penguins and the Flyers, I believe, have question marks in net. Ty Conklin and Dany Sabourin have done a nice job but don't really see either one putting together a good run (I've never been a big believer in Marc Andre Fleury). Martin Biron WILL be the Flyers starting goalie in the playoffs, assuming they make it, over Antero "Frank" Niittymaki. Biron is a steady goalie who will not win or steal wins for the Flyers, and this is what it takes to go far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For those of you who thought Niittmaki should be the starter, just look to his most recent stretch of games.

Gunderson - 2 Assists in All-Star Game

T-Devils rookie defenseman Ryan Gunderson picked up two assists in the ECHL All-Star game last night. The American Conference; however, fell to the National Conference in a shoot out, 10-7.

Gunderson joined Mathieu Melanson (Florida), Brett Hemingway (Reading), Jon D'Aversa (Wheeling) and Tomas Kudelka (Elmira) as one of five American Conference players who registered multi-point games.

The American Conference managed to go up 1-0, but then the National Conference proved its dominance and was on top by a score of 7-2 at one point, before Gunderson assisted on a goal by Melanson with 45 seconds left in the second to cut the lead to 7-3.

For the game, Gunderson was minus-two rating, but in an All-Star game, I don't think anyone is too concerned over defensive effort. The game is meant to showcase the great talent in this league and put on a show for the fans. Nobody wants to see a 2-1 All-Star game.

I was able to catch most of the game on NHL Network, which is a fantastic channel, by the way. If you haven't checked it out, I recommend doing so. Aside from showing live games, the network produces great hour-long footage of great playoff series such as Red Wings/Avalanche (97) and Devils/Flyers (2000). Their programming of "NHL on the Fly" is also good, recapping each night's action on the frozen pond.

Back to the game...

It seemed like a very energetic crowd out in Stockholm, Calif. last night, drawing just about 7,500 fans. They got to see a ton of goal scoring, 17 of them, and got to see their "home" team win. The 10 goals from the National Conference is the most since the Canada All-Stars set the record with 11 goals on Jan. 20, 1998 at Lafayette, La. and it ties the record for second-most goals set by the North All-Stars on Jan. 23, 1996 at Tallahassee, Fla.

Victoria's Ash Goldie set an ECHL record recoring six points with three goals and three assists. He broke Andy MacIntyre's record when he recorded five points for the Canada All-Stars, scoring four goals and an assist on Jan. 20, 1998 at Lafayette, La.

The 17 goals by both teams is the most scored since 1998 when the teams combined for 18 goals and ties the record for second-most goals set by the teams in 1996. The two teams combined for four goals in the third period, tying the record for third-most goals by both teams in a period.

T-Devils Return Home

The T-Devils will make their first trip home since the calendar turned to '08 tomorrow night against Reading for a 7:30 p.m. start at Sovereign Bank Arena.

I would expect Dave Caruso to be between the pipes, once again, coming off his shutout.

Big Two Points for T-Devils

The T-Devils came away with a win, 2-0 over Wheeling, in their final game of the road trip to start the new year. They ended the trip just 2-4-1, but more importanlty, earned a valuable two points over division-rival Wheeling. Every game against Johnstown and Wheeling should be circled on the schedule because these are the games that will determine if the T-Devils are going to make the playoffs.

Dave Caruso made 30 saves to record his second shutout of the season (his first coming against Johnstown on Dec. 27, 2007). Matt Rogers recorded both goals in the win. Caruso also recorded an assist on the first goal.

With the win, Trenton stays two points up on the Chiefs; however, Johnstown still has a game at hand over the T-Devils. If the Chiefs win their game at end, the two teams will be tied in the standings with 41 points, but Trenton would land in the sixth spot because they have less wins. It looks like Trenton, Johnstown and Wheeling will be battling the rest of the way for that fifth spot to get a play-in series against the fourth place team in the division. Right now it trails the fourth place team, Dayton, by 10 points.

Win a Vacation!
Up to six fans have a chance to win a getaway vacation to a Ski Lodge starting at the next home game.

T-Devils Shut Out Chiefs, 5-0

THREE STARS
1. Brad Mills - 3 goals, +4, 6 shots
2. Colin Pepperall - 4 assists, +4
3. Dave Caruso - 19 saves, shutout
*The hat trick was Mills' first career goals as a professional.
**Pepperall is the first T-Devil to record four points in a game.

Score update: Cincinnati 8, Wheeling 2

With the Wheeling loss, Trenton now has sole possession of fifth place in the division.

Standings up to date:
Cincinnati 44 points
Elmira 43
Reading 36
Dayton 31
T-DEVILS 23
Johnstown 21
Wheeling 21

Great win for the T-Devils tonight over the division-rival Chiefs. Trenton came into the night tied for fifth in the division with Johnstown and Wheeling. They sent Johnstown home with no points and Cincinnati helped out with a win over Wheeling.

On to the game...

The Red and Black pretty much controlled the game from the drop of the puck. The first period went back and forth for a while until Brad Mills took a holding penalty with just under three minutes left. The T-Devils got two breakaway chances from this point until the end of the period. One from Joe Rooney and one from Mills fresh out of the penalty box. Rooney shot it right into the midsection of Johnstown goalie Mike Brown; but Mills fired a wrister over his glove with 2.7 seconds left to put Trenton up 1-0.

I thought the goal was huge because the T-Devils totally outplayed the Chiefs and had they not have scored, the period would have been considered a "win" for Johnstown going into the 2nd tied 0-0.

Stephen Wood scored to make it 2-0 6:45 into the second to put Trenton up 2-0. It was a simple wrist shot that hit a piece of Brown before it went in, it was definitely one Brown would have liked to have back. Jim Henkel netted his sixth of the year after taking a pass from Colin Pepperall from behind the net and beating Brown. Mills scored his second of the game on a one-timer from Eric Castonguay with under three minutes left in the second.

Brown was pulled after two periods in favor of Ryan Nie.

Nie was beaten once by Mills to record the hat trick midway through the third period. He took a pass from Pepperall and beat Nie from in close in the crease.

Dave Caruso got his first shut out in over a year making 19 saves. His last blanking performance came as a Gwinnett Gladiator playing against Augusta Lynx on December 9, of '06. It was a relatively non busy night for him as the T-Devils defense clamped down and did not allow many good scoring chances. Caruso slid across and batted the puck out of mid air with the shaft of his paddle in the second period to rob Alexandre Imbeault.

T-Devils look for first 3 game win streak

The T-Devils have a chance to win three straight games for the first time all season tonight when they take on the Johnstown Chiefs at 7 p.m. at Sovereign Bank Arena.

A 3-2 win over the Reading Royals and a 4-1 win over the Dayton Bombers have Trenton sitting in a three-way tie for last place in the Northern Division with Johnstown and Wheeling. But it can separate itself from the bottom of the pack with a win tonight over the Chiefs. Wheeling plays tonight at home against Cincinnati, so hopefully the first-place 'Clones can get the job done. The Cyclones currently are tied with Elmira with 40 points. Both teams have identical 19-6-2 records.

I think this is an important stretch for the T-Devils confidence wise. They can dig themselves out of a deep hole they put themselves in earlier in the year with a couple of wins here. However, playing four games in five days can be a tough challenge. Even though they play the two teams that are tied for first, I think they are both winnable games. The team has just looked better over the past couple of weeks, especially in the third period. The T-Devils have put together back-to-back wins when being tied in the third period.

Check back after the game for a full recap of tonight's action.

T-Devils 1-2 to start 5-game Road Trip

After opening the season with three straight home games the T-Devils have embarked on a 5-game road trip and have just one win in three games thus far.

They opened up their 9-day trip away from Sovereign Bank Arena with back-to-back games at Cincinnati. After dropping the first game 5-3, the T-Devils came back to split the series with the Cyclones with a 2-1 win the following night.

They had a chance to win both games but fell short in a comeback effort in game one. Trailing 3-1, center Jim Henkle scored a pair of goals, including once on the power play, to tie the game at 3-3. However, Cincinnati scored 40 seconds into the third period when Bryan Schmidt blasted a one-timer past Jason Smith for a power play goal.

Timing seems to be a theme here in the early going of this season; and not in a good way. There have been a couple games that the T-Devils have either battled back to tie the game, or have led, only to see their opponent come back with a late-game goal or score right after they do. It could be a sign of a young team which it will hopefully learn as it goes along because giving up late goals can be devestating to a team, especially when they battle hard to tie the game.

Game two against the Cyclones was the opposite of what I just talked about. The T-Devils had been trailing 1-0 since the first period, but got two goals in a span of 1:08 to lift the team to a 2-1 victory and earning Jason Smith his first professional win as a goaltender making 33 saves.

Stephen Wood tied the game at 1-1 on a 5-on-4 power play, then Ryan Gunderson threw the puck towards the net and it deflected off a body in traffic to record his first goal as a professional just over a minute later, which was the game-winner.

A good sign in this game was the penalty kill, which was 6-for-6.

The third game of the trip, against the Johnstown Chiefs, was tied 1-1 in the third period until Jason Paige gave the T-Devils their first lead of the game when he deflected a Beau McLaughlin wrsit shot through the 5-hole of Chiefs goalie Ryan Nie.

But once again late goals doomed the T-Devils. Johnstown pushed the issue for the remainder of the period and ended up scoring twice in under three minutes to get a 3-2 win.

Trenton can finish with a winning record if it sweeps its final two games, tomorrow at the Wheeling Nailers and Saturday at the Dayton Bombers.

Devils Split with Elmira Jackals

The T-Devils took part in a two-game exhibition series with the Elmira Jackals and came away with a split this past weekend.

Game 1: Devils 2, Jackals 1
Game 2: Jackals 7, Devils 3

The Devils were successful in their first game of exhibition play, taking a 2-1 victory over the Elmira Jackals.

Devils' forward Brad Mills took advantage of a Chaz Johnson boarding call late in the third, and scored the game-winner with 2:12 remaining in regulation. Mills took a pass from Tony Zancanaro with a head of steam skating in the offensive zone and avoided a poke check from Jackals goalie Robert Gherson and burried it top shelf to give the Devils their first lead of the game, and hold on for the victory.

Heading into training camp, the team consisted of plenty of rookies on the blue line, three of its six players, but never showed signs of inexperience. The team killed off 10 out of 10 penalty kills.

On the opposite end, the team scored twice on the power play in 11 chances, including a 5-on-3 tally from Stephen Wood one-time blast from the pointto open the scoring for Trenton.

Devils' netminder Dave Caruso was extremely busy in net, having to make 36 saves to get the win.

In game two, the Devils took the lead briefly in the first period when Trevor Kell tipped in a Matt Cohen blast from the point just over four minutes in. However, the Jackals evened things up on a Kevin Jarman shot 1:13 after the Devils tally.

Jay Pemberton tied the score in the second period at 2-2, however, let up a goal 30 seconds later as the Jackals put together a three-goal rally in the middle frame to blow the game open.

Devils forward Eric Castonguay scored his first goal of the preseason on the power play at 15:36 of the third period.

New Jersey Native Rejoins Trenton

The Trenton Devils announced yesterday they they have agreed to terms with center Jim Henkel. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hailing from Hazlet, NJ, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder returns for his third season with Trenton.

Henkel, 28, tallied 21 goals, 29 assists and 52 penalties in minutes last season, while tying a team season-high with 69 games played.
During his first year with Trenton in 2004-05, Henkel ranked second on the team in goals (22) and points (47) and added 25 assists.

The sixth-year pro made a splash in his rookie season, posting career highs of 32 goals and 36 assists while helping to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to to the 2003 Kelly Cup and was named to the Northern Conference All-Star Team.

Originally selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the eighth round (#217 overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Henkel was a four-year letterman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1998-2002).

Henkel is the sixth player to sign with the Trenton Devils for the 2007-08 season, joining forwards Andrew Leach and Tony Zancanaro and defensemen Matt Cohen, Ryan Gunderson and Stephen Wood.

Devils vs. Flyers Tonight, 7:00 p.m.

The New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers will both open their preseason schedules tonight at the Soverign Bank Arena for a 7 o'clock start.

Brent Sutter will be making his coaching debut for the Devils, taking over for Lou Lamoriello, who fired Claude Julien with three games left in the 2006-07 regular season and coached the Devils in the playoffs.

Sutter, 45, resigned as coach and general manager of the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels -- accepting the resignation himself since he owns the team -- to become the Devils man behind the bench.

While the Devils have not yet announced a lineup for tonight, the Flyers did release a list of players who will be participating. Surprisingly, a good amount of regulars will take the ice including newly acquired, $10 million man, Danny Briere, who will most likely see time centering a line between Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble. Scottie Upshall, who was brought over in exchange for Peter Forsberg and his many pairs of skates last season, is also expected to lace 'em up, along with blue liner Kimo Timonnen, who signed as a free agent from the Nashville Predators over the summer.

With the complete roster overhaul the Flyers have gone through since last season's abysmal nightmare, finishing last in points in the entire NHL, Philadelphia can ill afford another sluggish start. Finding the right combination of line-sets and defensive pairings will be crucial in the preseason, instead of mixing and matching for the first month of the regular season when the games actually count.

The Devils -- who lost first-line center Scott Gomez via free agency to division-rival New York Rangers -- were busy in the offseason, but did not land any "big name" free agents. They did; however, get a pair of defensemen that will sure up the blue line in Karel Rachunek and Vitaly Vishnevski.

Rachunek spent last season playing for the Rangers and recorded six goals and 20 assists, while Vishnevski tallied three goals and 10 assists splitting time with Nashville and the Atlanta Thrashers.

To counter the loss of Gomez, the Devils went after former Flyer, Dainius Zubrus, and signed him to a six-year contract worth $20.4 million. Zubrus, 29, recorded 52 points (20g, 32a) with the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres in 2006-07.

Familiar Face Returns

The Trenton Devils announced yesterday that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Stephen Wood.

The 26-year-old, who was part of the 2005 Kelly Cup championship team, set career highs in the '05-'06 season with seven goals and 21 assists to lead all Trenton defensemen with 28 points. In his rookie campaign, Wood was second among defensemen for the Titans with 17 points
(4g, 13a) and chipped in 10 points (4g, 6a) in 20 playoff games in the run to capturing the Kelly Cup.

Wood tallied eight goals and six assists in 25 games with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL last season, and totaled seven points (1g, 6a) while splitting time between the Peoria Rivermen and Bridgeport Soundtigers of the AHL. The fourth-year pro has made 84 career AHL appearances with Peoria, Bridgewater and the Philadelphia Phantoms.

The four-year letterman at Yale is the third player to officially sign with the T-Devils, joining center Tony Zancanaro and defenseman Matt Cohen.

DEVILS MAKE TRADE

T-DEVILS MAKING MOVES

HITTING THE ROAD
The T-Devils announced yesterday the team will be traveling to NY to take on the self proclaimed "beasts of the east," Elmira Jackals, for two exhibition games. The Jackals are entering their first season in the ECHL, and played in the United Hockey League since 2000, and were affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. And yes, there is an NHL team in Columbus, Ohio. They'll be joining the T-Devils in the North Division this season.

Welcome!

TRENTON DEVILS SEASON LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AWAY!
I'd like to welcome all of you hockey fans to the Trenton Devils blog here at the Trentonian. My name is Rob Chakler and I will be covering the team throughout the season. I encourage all of you to respond to my posts, as your comments are greatly appreciated.

Obviously, the biggest story of the offseason was the name change from the Titans to the Devils. I would like to get some reaction from the fans in the city on here, so if you like the change, hate the change, or are indifferent, let me know.

As of now, all is quiet on the Devils front. The roster will be completed sometime before Oct. 1, but here are two guys that they have signed.

Matt Cohen became the first player to officially sign a contract with the Trenton Devils two weeks ago. He played nine games with the Titans last year (0 points and 8 PIMs), and will start his first professional season in the ECHL in '07-'08.
Tony Zancanaro played in eight games with the Titans last year (1G, 2A) and signed a contract with the T-Devils a day after Cohen.
