Blogs > Off Beat

Ah, blogging. Here's my little corner of it all -- in West Chester, and well, from wherever on whatever. I'll let you know what I'm thinking and you can let me know what you're thinking. But remember, I can delete your posts.

Acoustically Speaking

It must be a tough economy. I've taken on a third, unpaid, part-time job -- learning from the ground up how to mix sound live for bands. It's a great skill to have if you're a musician but one that takes a long time to learn and offers more ways to screw up than imaginable. Go to a show and think it sounds terrible. There's a good chance it was the band, but also it was a good chance it was the guy behind the mixing board. There are more knobs than people tent to realize and to do it well it takes a good scientific understanding of acoustics. I'm sure it's going to be fun, but also a great challenge. But I think I have a good teach and I'm ambitious with it, so hopefully it will do me good. Either way, I'd wager, one of the 7 or 8 of you that actually read my blog sometimes may see me mixing for some band at some point. Remember, If I'm working and the sound is bad ... it's the band and not me.

September 27

Another Saturday with a great lineup. That day is also Oxford's 175th Birthday so streets will be closed and we'll be in the thick of it. I've written about the Sky Drops here before, in all their shoegaze delight. They'll be joined with I, Fanblades from Newark and the Deaf Aides from Philly. For pretty songs, check them out and come to the show.

The Note

Opening night came and went.  You can read all about it here .  What I found to be the best part was the sound system.  The place sounds pretty good.  It's loud where it could be loud and tapers off as you move away from the stage.  The beer selection is pretty good too.  Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves put on a great show.  It's nice having a venue in West Chester again.  I grew up going to Rex's but as I've grown up so has a local venue.  Enjoy the bands. This isn't from The Note, but a different performance by Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves

Stolen

A friend of mine's bike was recently stolen. It is a green mountain bike with a basket on the front -- much like the one in the photo.

It would be nice to get it back I guess. Something like a story from PW
