Tide wins, Tide wins

For the first time since 1994, the Columbia boys’ basketball team has advanced to the semi-finals of the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs.
Monday night, two days after beating Lancaster Catholic for the Section 4 championship, the Tide rallied from six point down at the half to beat Elizabethtown, 61-52 at Conestoga Valley.
The Tide will now meet Section One champion McCaskey tonight in a 7 p.m. tip, scheduled for Lampeter-Strasburg High School. McCaskey advanced to the semi-finals with a 73-44 destruction of Manheim Central. The other semi-final matches Section One runner-up Hempfield against Lancaster Catholic, the Section 4 runner-up. Hempfield moved on with a 57-40 win over Lebanon, while Catholic advanced by beating Section 2 champ Conestoga Valley, 69-56.
Columbia last played McCaskey in the L-L League playoffs in the quarter-finals of the 1990 playoffs. Columbia won that game 64-62 and eventually won the league title that year. The year before, Columbia beat McCaskey, 67-61 to win the L-L League title.

Information you need to know

Officials from the United States Environmental Protection Agency went door-to-door Tuesday handing out information sheets concerning the removal of radioactive waste from seven sites owned by Strube Inc. in Columbia, Mount Joy, Marietta and East Donegal Township.

According to Trish Taylor, community involvement coordinator for the EPA, the two-page handout informs residents within walking distance of the Strube sites about what is contained in the seven warehouses, health and safety concerns, information on what the cleanup of the sites will be and who to contact for more information.

The United States EPA is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection in accessing and overseeing the cleanup of the seven sites in Lancaster County. The warehouses store miscellaneous items, including old aviation dials and instruments with radium paint, a mixture of combustibles and devices containing mercury. Taylor said the company is required to remove the radium containing items and “decommission” the warehouses.

Three of Strube’s facilities are located in Columbia and there are two in Marietta. The other two warehouses are located in Mount Joy and East Donegal Township, Taylor said.

Taylor said the EPA has developed a web site to address the Strube cleanup effort: www.epaosc.net/Strube.

For other information, contact the EPA at 215-814-5539, DEP at 787-2480, or the Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency at 664-1200.

Wow

Last night was definitely one of those nights when I got home, that was like WOW!

Wow because after sitting down to watch some college hoops, I was stunned to read on the bottom line that Bob or Bobby Knight had stepped down as coach at Texas Tech.

Had to wonder, before seeing most of the Sports Center special, if Knight had hit a player or did something stupid and was going to get fired. After listening to the experts, it just seemed like it was time. An odd time at that.

Despite his short comings off the court, Knight was an excellent X and O coach. Maybe he can move to New York and help struggling Hooiser alum Isiah Thomas with the Knicks.

I remember when he was at Indiana and went to a game at Penn State right after the Jordan Center openeed and listening to one of his press confernces. It definitely wasn't g-rated.

This could be a big week for big time coaching changes. Rumor has it there is another one in the works and it could be a factor in football recruiting.

Great smell

It's a tough assignment, but someone had to do it.

Holy Trinity started baking their tasty fastnachts yesterday.

Today being Shrove Tuesday, I made the annual visit to Holy Trinty to grab some pictures, which will be featured on page one of this week's edition.

The volunteers were busy, rolling, glazing, frying and packing the tasty treats.

Had two samples this morning, but right from the fryers. MMM Good.

If I were a student over there, it would be tough to go to school, with that smell going throughout the building.

You can still order the tasty treats by calling 684-0487.

There are four more weeks of baking, through the first week of March on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Thanks for the fastnachts! Hard to believe they've been doing it for 85 years!

What is the better fastnacht? Plain or glazed?
